The Connected Educator Chapter 5 Summary - Camryn Juckett

To begin with, chapter 5 of The Connected Educator starts off by explaining how Web 2.0 tools are not useful to users unless the users know how the app is helping you understand and learn. Understanding how each tool you use is very important because you need to know how the tool benefits you and your own learning styles. Before downloading and using a Web 2.0 tool without knowing the benefits of it, do some research on the tool. For example, if you are using the tool for school, view and understand how the tool will be useful in your schoolwork, and give the tool a practice before committing to using it daily.

Under the chapter's first subject of social bookmarking, it describes how users can bookmark (tag) a website they are interested in using while doing research. Bookmarking a website will categorize your websites and keep you organized. While tagging websites, "it can also help you connect with friends and colleagues" (page 74).

Moving on to the next section of the chapter, the author gives us insight on the website Delicious (www.delicious.com). This website is a tool to help organize your tagged websites and you can even view other user's tags to find websites that relate to your tags as well. Not only does this website only help you with keeping track of your websites that you are interested in but it also helps you connect with others who have similar interests in the same tools as you do. This is a big advantage to getting to know others who have the same passions as you. Delicious can also help you build a connected learning network. Just as we view each other's blogs, Delicious allows users to subscribe to other users accounts to help intertwine people with the same interests. Subscribing to others is very convenient because once you are on Delicious you will be able to get to the account fairly quickly to see what the account owner has been recently tagging. This tool can be a very huge assist to creating your connected learning community.

Another tool similar to Delicious is Diigo (www.diigo.com). Just like the tool Delicious, Diigo offers a coordinated network of tagged websites. But something that makes Diigo different From Delicious is that Diigo offers users to make annotations on articles and websites, and can even highlight information you feel is important. The site is divided into three sections, "My Library, My Network, and My Groups. My Library is best for research. My Network allows you to build a personal learning network by following or connecting with people who have the same research interests. My groups allows members of your local professional  learning community or global community of practice to share documents as you explore" (page 76). These three groups differ Diigo from Delicious, especially My groups. This section helps you communicate about your specific interest with others who feel the same. It will even alert the group when someone posts new information. Using Diigo can help you a lot if you are struggling with making connections and helps you navigate more Web 2.0 tools.

In the section, Tools for Connecting and Collaborating, the author gives examples of online resources for building your personal learning network.

Blogs play a big role in communication. You can post mostly anything, ranging from thoughts, opinions, and interests and people have the ability to comment under your posts  to offer feedback. "Blogs have become the fastest-growing personal publishing medium because blogging platforms such as Blogger, WordPress, and Tumblr, all are free for users, allowing you to create your own blogging website in a matter of minutes without any knowledge of web design or HTML" (page 77). These blogging websites are easy to navigate and easy to connect with others.

Podcasts are also another form of communication. If you are not a fan of reading, you can listen to a podcast that discusses information you would like to learn about in audio form. Podcasts are easy to download to any device, and there are many you can choose from. Creating your own podcasts is another way to connect and learn as well. Recording your own podcast can help your own learning skills because you can go back and listen to them if you need a refresh about a topic. There is also room for creativity when making a podcasts. It allows you to add music, sound effects, etc. Podcasts are very popular right now, especially because many celebrities have their own. Making one yourself can be productive for your own learning and also others learning.
And last but not least, the last section of the chapter exaggerates how managing your online reputation is a must. Being professional and positive are the characteristics you will always need with creating a personal learning network. Keeping people involved and intriguing them with your insight is very important. By always staying positive and being professional, more and more users will return to your personal learning network and will always want to see what you have to say. If you are in any way negative and start to become unprincipled it will drive people away from your network. In today's world, if you mess up once people are ready to pounce on the problem and make it known not to return to your network. Therefore, just be sure you are making your network worthwhile and always keep it classy.
To end this summary, relating this chapter to my job is fairly easy. As I am undecided, becoming a nurse, or athletic trainer, or whatever it may be in the medical field, social bookmarking is a must for me. I will need to review many sites, keep tabs, and highlight important information to help my education. Reviewing websites that will help me in my future career will be very helpful when it comes to studying or anything in that area. Blogs could also help me if I need help with something, many people will be able to deliver feedback which is a great outlet for me. Overall, using all of these tools is something I will need in the future and I am glad I am learning about it now.

Why do you think that Web 2.0 tools are helpful for your career?

  1. Hey Camryn,
The way this chapter describes Web 2.0 is really interesting, and a little outdated in a way. Web 2.0 is just the internet we use now, a focus on the users. Nursing is a career that requires continued education and learning. In my current job, I’m a simulation lab tech and besides nursing students, we also help out practicing nurses learn new techniques and sharpen old ones. How else will the internet help you build your learning community?

    1. Hello, Camryn!

I really love the opening of your blog, and I feel as though everyone should read it. It really defines how and why web tools aid individuals, groups, communities, and more. I love how the chapter covers the idea and concept of blogs, where we as a class are utilizing this exact feature. It made me feel in the new technology! I also love the fact that we live in a world where it is so easy to obtain information, or even utilize sources such as a podcast for a quick at your fingertip synopsis to learn and study. I also admire how you touch upon the ideas of spreading positivity on your personal learning network, and almost how those “vibes' ', if they are bad, cna quite literally drive people away. The way you connect blogs to your profession is such an interesting take, almost like a black web, A place where things that might be taboo or not yet even though about are able to flourish. Lastly, those are two very different job fields in my mind. What is the commonality between why you want to do both?

  2. Hi Camryn,
I think you hit all the key points that the authors were trying to make with your summary. I like how you begin by clarifying that web tools won't be useful to users unless they know how to use them. This caught my attention because it is something that I didn't grasp while reading the chapter myself. I agree with you that bookmarking is super important and I think it is for any future career. In my future profession as an accountant, I will definitely need to save financial reports, news articles, accounting blogs, etc. to be able to refer back to. In addition, blogs will be a great tool for me to use because they're a way to collaborate and learn from others in my profession. Do you think that social bookmarking will be the best and most useful type of web tool for you in your future career?

  3. Camryn,
I think you did an amazing job at summarizing Chapter 5. You highlighted many major points throughout your summary. I agree that podcasts are a great way of communication. You can learn many things through podcasts. Not everyone has time to read, but you can listen to a podcast from anywhere such as your car. You had stated that creating your own podcasts is a way to connect with others. Have you ever created your own podcast?

  4. Hi Camryn,
I think because you are undecided you have so many new resources and tools to help you make the choice that would be the most beneficial to you. Now that you're knowledgeable of so many different platforms that these professional careers use you can do more research there gaining insight into their lives. Do you think there is a platform you would use the most in your future career of whatever you do decide to go in to? Great post!

  6. Hi Camryn,
I like how you explained blogs and what they're used for. As an aspiring teacher, I will assign my students a partner and have them read and respond to each other's blog posts to gain feedback and differing mindsets from their own. Growing social skills is very important and blogs is one way to help us expand mindsets and communication. I enjoyed reading your blog, it was very well done!

  8. Hi Camryn! Funny enough I actually have used the tagging site Diigo before for an old project, so I though it was super cool that the book actually had that in there as well as some of the other similar sites that does tagging. One of my favorite ways to get some information in easily is podcasts. Not just for work but for other topics im interested as well, so I am glad you brought that topic up!
